Dartmouth College Library seeks an energetic, organized, and experienced printer and book artist to manage the Book Arts Workshop, a letterpress and book binding studio that serves the students, faculty, and staff of Dartmouth College as well as the local community.  This person will report to the head of Preservation Services and will oversee the Book Arts Workshop, and managing all workshop activities including curricular support, instruction, planning and programming, supervision, equipment maintenance, and budgeting.  The successful candidate will develop Workshop programs to increase the effectiveness of the studios as a College-wide and community resource.  The Special Instructor serves as a liaison to the faculty and will provide curricular support for classes involving a book arts component.

This is a term position at either three quarters time year round or full-time for 10-months, ending June 30, 2015.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:  Practical hand skills in letterpress printing, bookbinding, and innovative book arts; demonstrated ability to use and maintain a variety of printing presses including the Vandercook, iron hand presses, Pearl, and smaller hand presses; ability to use polymer plate printing methods; willing to experiment with innovative uses of presses; knowledge of history of the book, history of printing, and the field of contemporary book arts. Excellent interpersonal skills; flexibility in fluid situations and ability to manage student projects in short timeframes. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently without close supervision.
Familiarity with computer software applications including spreadsheet, word processing, graphic design, email, social media, and web-based programs. Ability to lift 30 lbs.; comfortable with the use of solvents, inks, and adhesives in the studio space.

The successful candidate will possess 2-3 years relevant letterpress and book arts experience and be a practitioner of own creative work in the area of printing, bookbinding, and the book arts.  Bachelor’s degree preferred; MFA in Book Arts or similar program desired.  Significant professional experience in printing, binding, and the book arts may substitute for degree requirements.

RANK AND PAY: Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications for Delivery, Research and Management – Level DRM D. Full benefits package including vacation; comprehensive health care; retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; and relocation assistance.
