    Hello LOL Members:)

This inquiry is not a “what is wrong with my press” but more a “how do I restore my  cutter” question. I recently purchased a 19″ Challenge guillotine paper cutter that resided in a garage for the last few years. I have managed to remove much of the grime, grease and dirt but the rust remains!

I would like to avoid using really strong solvents to remove the rust any suggestions would be most appreciated before I have to go toe to toe with this metal goliath again because so far as the points stand it’s Challenge cutter 2 points, me zero.

Soak the metal in vinegar.  It’s smelly but works.  I’d mix 1 part vinegar to 1 part water (more concentrated works faster, but then you have to buy a lot more vinegar!).  The acid (acetic acid) will react with the rust and float to the surface of the liquid.  If you don’t have a container large enough for soaking, vinegar-dipped rags will work, although not as well.

You can also rub a cut lemon on the metal (citric acid), but this will leave a slightly sticky film that you’ll need to wipe off later.  Good luck!

Have you tried electrolytic rust removal?  I tried this on a few C&P parts and it works wonders.  Just google it and there are a plethora of instructional sites/youtube videos/discussions.

    I hope that’s helpful!
