Hi, Gals (and Guys):I am about to take in a wedding suite order in collaboration with a calligraphy who is awesome.  The Invites and return cards will more than likely be Lettra 110#, but the artist…Continue

Gary Johanson replied to Christy Etheredge's discussion What is in a name?
"I almost always name my presses!  They are too important not to.  We name ships, aircraft, and if you go back to the early 1800s, in the days of the thwart-mounted 8-gauge bird guns of the Chesapeake, even the guns!  Even Swords…"

Starting out in the World of Bridal Showcases

In an effort to broaden my net, I am considering joining a local Bridal Association which guarantees at least two high profile shows in some really nice venues.  I've never shown before, so before I take the plunge, I thought I would attend one of the shows given next month.I have made several sets of Wedding Stationery over the past five years, and I believe I have at least sufficient samples to present what I do.  I don't have "standard" designs, since each and every order is completely…See More

Gary Johanson replied to Michelle Brownridge's discussion Newbie needs advice on pricing!
"Well, it looks a little late for dealing with the actual quote needed, but i might comment anyway concerning pricing. One point is that no matter what, market value rules. That being said, the market value of letterpress printed products are…"

Judith Berliner replied to Gary Johanson's discussion Envelopes suitable for Calligraphy
"Gary, From what i understand, there is no sizing in the lettra paper. As a result, ink can travel on the fibers. Crane's Crest is a perfect match for color. It does have a watermark. Strathmore writing, color soft white is a good match also."

Evelopes suitable for Calligraphy

Hi, Gals (and Guys):I am about to take in a wedding suite order in collaboration with a calligraphy who is awesome.  The Invites and return cards will more than likely be Lettra 110#, but the artist specifically asked that I not use their envelopes.  She will be hand lettering these envelopes, and it seems that Lettra's matching envelopes bleed india ink owing to it's open fibre characteristic.  Any pointers where I might find some calligraphy-friendly envelopes, 4-Bar, A7 inner / outer that…See More

Gary Johanson replied to Carrie Ritter's discussion Please Help an Amateur Printer decide the next step up in letterpress printing.
"From a "traditional" letterpress point of view, so much depends on what you want to focus on.  Will you be setting traditional metal type, for instance?  If so, a platen press and that poco proofer would be ideal.  Will you…"

"Davina, at this point it's been really hard for me to beat good ol' 110 and 220 Lettra.  But don't limit yourself just to the soft, open sized papers.  During my last workshop, I had my student run a copper add cut of an…"

Gary Johanson replied to davina farinola's discussion upgrade from Pearl to C&P?
"Ask if a video of the press in action is possible.  Or at least, detail photos.  What you want to look out for are welds, prior repairs, wear on the roller saddles (unlike your pearl, which uses hooks instead of saddles) - you more than…"
