New letterpress design book

The Handy Book of Artistic Printing: a Collection of Letterpress Examples by Dough Clouse and Angela Voulangas shows Victorian ad and display design at it's ornamental, over-the-top best. From Amazon:

"During the late nineteenth century, letterpress printers, engravers, and lithographers boldly challenged the rational… Continue

Iowa City Book Festival

Hi ladies, I wanted to let everyone know about the first annual Iowa City Book Festival, to be held July 18th in Gibson Square (by the UI Main Library south entrance). I'll have a table there as Heroes & Criminals Press, along with lots of talented printers, binders, papermakers, writers, calligraphers... you name it, Iowa City's got it! Along with the bookish activities of readings and panel discussions, it'll also just be a fun day with food, music, and demonstrations. More info is at… Continue

The Chandler Can

I am one of the ladies at Spark, one of the non-printing ladies. In over two years that I've been with Spark, I've learned a lot about our presses. Our Windmill is our workhorse, the Cylinder is our big daddy and the C&P is just plain reliable.

Yesterday we received some press sheets in the mail. The press sheets had a one color offset design and we will letterpress wording on top of this. The paper is a classic crest 165# cover, not our usual letterpress paper. We had provided… Continue

My weekend letterpress workshop!

It went so fast, and I enjoyed it so very much! I learned a lot! I worked on a Vandercook Press proof 4. Since the time was short 10-4 sat and sunday, I really wanted to focus more on learning than designing. I have so much more appreciation for my printer now than ever!

I turned the workshop onto Ladies of Letterpress. The group memebers weren't familiar, and I told them that ya'll are such a great group for information and Q&A. All of us in the workshop were very novice, but I… Continue

The Recession's Hidden Victims

Picture via The New York Times

The New York Times had an interesting article in its Sunday Magazine last week called "The Self-Employed Depression"--needless to say, I thought, "That's me!" (Self-employed, though not depressed). It's a great article…

200 members!

Hooray ladies--we just reached 200 members! I'm so pleased. My goal is to have every lady letterpress-printer signed up (and a few men too, why not :) ) someday--can you imagine? So tell a friend about Ladies of Letterpress, and envision a big hug-shaped emoticon here.

Hire A Printer
Old Maid card deck protfolio exchange- last chance

Hi there,

Now that the NSS is over, and everybody is settling into the summer...... Ladies of Letterpress, we need YOU!

Think about joining a fabulous group and participate in the Old Maid card deck exchange. There are SO many great printers out there. Come join the fun. The finished deck can travel and be shown at galleries etc. It will be shown for sure in September here in my strange town of Baton Rouge (but we get some good art lovers that come out). And of course each… Continue
