Printing in Tibet

Printeresting has posted this great video of printers working in the Derge Parkhang, the "last remaining Tibetan printing temple of its kind". Not exactly letterpress printing, but I'm immersed in Asian printing and bookbinding history, and consider block printing an ancient precursor to letterpress.

I just love the fluidity of their… Continue

myPANTONE iPhone app

I could easily become one of those people who collects things until it drives them nuts--miniature kitchen tools, old postcards, ironic t-shirts--but so far I've been able to keep myself in check. It's getting harder and harder to resist the thousands of awesome-sounding and useful-seeming iPhone apps, and even harder to resist the wealth of Pantone products out there (sneaks,… Continue

100th Anniversary Vandercook Model

After working with Heidelbergs, I've finally come around to Vandercooks.

I've assembled one too... and so can you! (^_^)

The Pacific Center for the Book Arts has published a new Vandercook paper model to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the press. This press was designed by Shirley Edwards, who used to work at Logos Graphics (where I currently work). I helped in the layout and print production of this piece and have… Continue

Film titles through the ages

Christian Annyas loves film, and like many of us, I know, he especially loves movie titles (anyone else squint at the credits to see who designed them?). He has assembled hundreds of opening and closing titles, from the silent film era onwards, which are fabulous examples of the still thriving art of hand-lettering. A few of my favorites are below:…

Ravenswood Art Walk... for all you Chicagoans with nothing better to do this weekend!

Hey Ladies,

This weekend (Oct. 3rd and 4th) is the annual Ravenswood ArtWalk in Chicago. Many of the lovely ladies of letterpress will be showing off their studios all weekend, Starshaped included. We're drying our Olympic-sized tears on the 100lb cover stock we're using to set up Chicago-style 'flags' for the general public to come and print. Rally with us and come on over for treats and good conversation. We'll also be setting up new prints we're working on for the Fall and the holidays.… Continue
