Starshaped Press is looking for an intern to start anytime in the near future, and thought we'd try here first!
We are located in Chicago and work strictly with hand set metal and wood type. We have an extensive type collection that is a living, breathing monster in our studio that needs to be maintained. Duties would include sorting, setting, organizing, labeling, proofing and otherwise monitoring the type (mostly metal) so that we can make sure that it all gets used properly. You'd learn all of the details and terminology surrounding typography, as well as all of the ins and outs of makeready on a C&P as we do all of our metal type proofing on platens. While we enjoy the zen like nature of this type of work, not to mention the fun of setting lots of great type, our work load is such that we'd like a bit of help. And if you feel there are better ways to make it work, we're open to suggestions; if you can prove your adeptness at handling said type, you may use the studio for occasional personal projects. Typographic experience (even digital) is preferred, but not necessary.
It is NOT a glamorous or paid position, though we will happily share
our in-depth knowledge of typesetting and will buy you lunch. Hours are very flexible based on what works for you, and if you are seeking internship credit, we will sign whatever paperwork is necessary. Contact us for more details!
