Hi everyone. This is my first time posting. I have a question about using images, lyrics, movie quotes, and other things that seem like they would be protected. It seems like a lot of people are doing this and I wasn’t sure if it was legal. Does anyone know of a good resource for getting some good information on what is allowed as far as reselling things that contain these items? I guess I can go to an attorney at some point, but I thought I’d see if you had encountered any wisdom on this subject. Thanks so much!

    Hi Alisa,

I have some trouble with this too, and and tend to veer away from iffy texts just to be on the safe side. I tend to work more with book texts, though, and I use Project Gutenberg for a guide – if it’s on their site, it’s ok to use (http://www.gutenberg.org/).

Thanks Jessica. They have some interesting stuff. Perhaps we will bump into each other at the conference. Have a great week!

I was curious about this too. Hopefully someone out there knows so we don’t have to go the lawyer route…

I curated a contemporary art show where I wanted to quote the lyrics to “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni MItchell and somehow I got in touch with someone who represented her.  I was told I had to pay around $100 to just print the lyrics on the press release.  So, I didn’t print all the lyrics, just the line I was referring to in my exhibition.  This is probably not helping, but I would imagine selling something and putting someone’s lyrics on it is some kind of infringement and you would need permission.
