I’m using 110lb cover from Mohawk. I haven’t checked it with the post office folks, but I’ve sent (and received) all kinds of paper as postcards, and haven’t had a problem yet, so I think it’s a pretty wide range to work with. But Camille makes a good point – I don’t plan on mailing any of these, just keeping them all for myself 🙂

Thanks. I will check with my post office again. I plan on printing a larger run and trying to sell them locally, so I would love to know that they are deliverable. I’ll post again if I find out more this week.

Hi, all.I decided to try Lettra on this project; haven’t used it before, and it seemed good for a two-sided thing. We’ll see how the experiment goes :-)Ren

Karen,That’s a good question. I’m not really sure how to answer it. I will check with my local post office on Monday. I’m not sure if anyone will actually be mailing these postcards, or if they will become more of a collectors item. 16 mil is fairly thick paper although no where close to say lettra. Ladies chime in here.

Camille and others…I’m finding no answers on paper choice suggestions for postcards. I may go ahead and use any thick stock but the USPS design rep insisted that the paper should not be more than .016. Help?

The Adana is a wonderful press. It is light weight and easily portable. It is not cast iron like the antique Kelseys or Sigwalts you maybe thinking of. The Adanas are made from solid aluminum alloy (aircraft grade) and cast steel. The 8×5 is 35 pounds. Contact me if you need more information.

@ Debra, I’ve seen your work, beautiful! I’m in Atlanta too, we have a letterpress and rent press time to teach as well as for those interested in printing stuff for their business (we do our own design and prints too). If you ever want to come by to see the press let me know! – toni@praxiumpress.com

Thanks to both of you for your help. I’ve run some proofs on my Nolan successfully. Then the form is going into my little Kelsey and I’ll see how much building up I’ll have to do, if any.

I find that my wood type ranges in height, probably due to wear and age; some are higher than the metal I use and some are lower. I can mix them pretty successfully though with a little care. I don’t mix large, fat faces of wood with tiny metal, but if you have some 8- or 10-line wood type it’s not so bad. Regardless of the press I’m on, I usually…[Read more]

@kseniyathomas I’m loving the whole book. Initially I was incredibly resistant to letterpress, mostly just because I was overwhelmed by the intensity and meticulousness of it all. Ironically, I felt bookbinding was less stressful. But now I am fully embracing both and enjoying it.

@erinmorris That’s so neat! So you started out as a bookarts person? Have you switched to printing, or have you just lowered your resistance to it? 🙂

@kseniyathomas I am Kelly’s sister! How crazy is that?
Alabama is wonderful. Well, I should say the program is wonderful. The culture and climate take some getting used to 🙂 Steve Miller and Anna Embree are amazing teachers and have been awesome to work closely with. My first year was really tough but it was amazing. I was really resistant to…[Read more]

@erinmorris HA! I am Danny’s sister–are you Kelly’s sister? We went to Skyline together and hand many of the same classes! We just love the Vestals too–Joey and Dan have known each other for ever. This is too funny! How are you liking Alabama so far?

@kseniyathomas Kseniya, thanks for welcoming me! I’m new to letterpress and it looks like this site will be a wonderful resource and learning tool.
We live in such a small world. Are you Danny’s sister? I think we went to the same church in SLC. Christ United Methodist? I’m really good friends with the Vestal family…
