Hi AlanA chase made out of Brazilian Iron Wood sounds (and looks) brilliant! Where do I go on your website to purchase such a chase?

Yes, indeed it is. It is very exciting – as well as satisfying to me, personally – to finally be getting these casting projects off the ground. It took a long time to find the right foundry – willing to make one or two individual parts at prices we can afford… But now I need to upgrade my metal working shop and get my Bridgeport Milling Machine…[Read more]

Yes,. It is very exciting – both for the folks who are looking for these replacement parts – and for me, who *promised* that I’d be making them a few years ago… Getting started on projects like this does take some time, (and a lot has happened in my old life since I began this adventure) but is very exciting once we see some progress..I will…[Read more]

Tatiana -Yes. I have already made chases for my own Golding Official. I used an extremely hard wood called “Ipe” or “Brazilian Iron Wood.” Initially, I’d planned on using it as a pattern for casting, but it works so well, that I’m satisfied to use it as the final chase. I actually made 4, using slightly different designs, but they all work fine -…[Read more]

Hi AlanWill you also be able to create Chase Beds/ Chases for other models of table top presses? I’m fixing up a Golding Official tabletop No. 3 which is largely intact barring its missing chase – and I’m not having much luck finding a chase.Tatiana

Not strange. Normal for me. I turn down all jobs for money as printing is just a hobby for me. Sometimes a job is impossible to refuse (family, close friends, etc.) then I try to invite the person over to print their own invitation or whatever. Usually works and since they print their own…no complaints or do-overs. And some folks have a better…[Read more]

UPDATE ON THIS CHASE-BED QUESTION:Well, it’s been a while, but I have *finally* delivered our (first) 5×8 Chase Bed pattern (with matching chase) to the foundry. I’ll pick up the raw casting on or about Feb 12, and then will begin dealing with the issues related to machining, then hardening the chase bed. It will still be a while, but at least the…[Read more]

Hi Jill,I don’t offer printing services either. I refer requests to other local printers who rely on this type of work. I actually enjoy telling people about what I do that’s different from what they may have heard about letterpress, and I think it’s great that we can open their eyes to all the possibilities that are out there with letterpress…[Read more]

Hi Jill…I’m in the same situation. I have my presses set up only to print my own work and then I offer community workshops to help pay the rent once and awhile. I fortunately have a letterpress friend that I refer all commercial requests to and explain my presses aren’t good for large runs and multi-color. I don’t know where you’re located, but…[Read more]

That is my thought as well – I am hopeful that John Barrett at Letterpress THings might have the replacement piece available in his warehouse.I am also slightly concerned about the possibility of accidentally damaging the gooseneck in the process of removing it though. Apparently (and I quote) the Model “O” makes this a challenge as the shafts, if…[Read more]

Tatiana, my experience is to be wary of welding a key broken part due to issues of strength and precision. I would get a replacement part if possible.

Yeah its a weird place for a shipping related break – but the gentleman I purchased the press from has been a standup guy about replacing/repairing the gooseneck so I’m erring on the side of believing the shipping exacerbated existing damage that this guy didn’t notice maybe?

Hard to believe shipping could cause such a break.

Indeed- I’ve heard that John Barret of Letterpress Things in Chicopee might be a good person to approach on such matters.
