I just got a 8×12 C&P old style press from a sweet little elderly man this weekend. The press is assembled accept for the flywheel and flywheel shaft. He told me to call him when I want to put the flywheel back onto the press….he said to call him so he can set the timing. What does that mean? Anyone know? Thank you for your input 🙂

Are you using a treadle or a motor to power the press? If you’re using a motor, the drive belt will need to be adjusted to the correct tension. And some motors have adjustable speeds, so perhaps that’s what he’s calling the timing. But I usually think “timing” in this situation is the operator’s hand eye coordination and attention span.

Thank you Mare. The press doesn’t have a treadle (sadly) and the motor he gave me is broken. I took the motor just for a reference when I get it up and running. I’m not sure what to do with it yet. It came with 2 belts. Thank you again very much 🙂

It’s pretty easy to find (or make) a treadle! I made one out of a u bolt/metal rod and an old metal table leg, it works great. or there are usually a few on ebay, or google them. the treadle is easier to control (for me) than the motor, and in my heyday I could do about 400 impressions an hour…good luck! it’s always empowering to get an old press up and running.
