I feel dumb asking this, but what is the proper way to trim something with crop marks?

I know if I’m doing something on a rotary cutter and I can just trim between the crop marks. However if I’m using a stack or guillotine cutter trimming one side removes the crop marks for the adjacent sides. The only thing I have found to do was to take one of the trimmed off crops and place it on top of what you are trimming. Is this the right way to do it?
