Because of disruptions from the Covid-19 virus, APHA has decided to postpone the deadline for proposals until April 30, 2020. The PDF link above is updated with the correct dates.

    Thanks

The May 22 event “Women in a Golden Age of Artists’ Books” has been moved to the Center for Book Arts, located at 28 West 27th Street, 3rd Floor, between Broadway and 6th Avenue.

If you are still interested in attending, please email RSVP@centerforbookarts.org and note that space in this venue is limited to 75 guests.

Thanks, @deeelling, @lauritaylor, @brianallen, and @kseniya for your responses. It’s always interesting to hear solutions to this age-old problem.

Rules of thumb are very interesting and thank you for sharing them. As Kseniya described, I suspect many printers rely on less mathematical methods such as intuition. For instance, if a certain job appears more challenging to print, a printer would sense this and reasonably cut more paper.

Unfortunately, I have a conflict and I won’t be speaking about this issue at the Ladies of Letterpress conference as planned. That said, I still plan to explore this topic and will write here when I post material online. In the meantime, please keep this thread going if you have other approaches to cutting paper prior to printing.

We discontinued buying Katz a few years ago when the cracking issue developed. It used to be a fine coaster but…something changed. It sounds like others in this thread experienced this as well. I don’t believe the coaster stock is grained like other types of paper, and the problems routinely surfaced whenever we hit the stock relatively hard. This caused complaints from customers who felt they deserved more impression since they were “paying for letterpress.” We experimented with a lot of alternate papers and found that thick printing papers (though they printed well) did not absorb moisture as a coaster should. To our surprise, we were most happy with an 0.050 double white chip from Newman Paperboard. This had the right combination of impression and absorbency. We currently purchase this in lots of 630 26×28 sheets, but I’m not sure whether or not they sell in smaller quantities. Perhaps there are other sources for 0.50 white chip who can sell in smaller amounts. Hope this helps!

Sorry, Davina, we don’t sell paper unless of course we print on it first ;)Our telephone prefix is 315, so I believe you would dial:0011 1 315 473 0930What paper are you looking for? I suppose it must not be distributed in Australia? Paper is heavy and would probably cost a lot to bring over yourself, I would think.
