Kristina Hopkins replied to the topic How much to charge for custom design services? in the forum Business Matters 15 years, 9 months ago
Hi Emily,I’ve been reading a really great book, “The Designer’s Guide To Marketing And Pricing: How To Win Clients And What To Charge Them”, it’s a recently published book (I think in ’08) and I’ve found it very helpful in determining how much to charge clients for custom design services.This book has a few worksheet-type pages where you breakdown…[Read more]

@emilymartin Hi, Emily! I don’t really understand this business on the net but you ARE my friend so this new way is very nice. I have been thinking about you these last two days – probably why you made me an official friend? I’m dyeing vellum for an edition and beginning the printing of the book soon. Fall is here in all its glory. Ah, New…[Read more]

Porridge Papers makes an Ultra Thick weight that’s comparable to a 600g or 220#. Parent sheets are 19 x 25 and are handmade with a full deckled edge. Depending on the project and the number of sheets you need, the paper can be custom made to match colors and weights. http://www.porridgepapers.com

We get all of our dies from Davis Dies in MO. I’d certainly recommend them 🙂

I ordered rollers from NA Graphics in April, but never got them. I was hoping to get them by end of June for a demo I was giving in early July, and I got a few emails saying that they had shipped, but they never arrived. I called them in mid-July to tell them that I was moving at the end of July, and gave them my new address, but needless to say -…[Read more]

@tulsagleeson Hi Tula,
What kind of Adana do you have? I’ve actually been thinking of ordering a 5X8 from the UK from Roy Caslon.
Thanks for the friend request!

I’ve now been using california wash and love it – not sure about the rollers though. Is that something you could ask the manufacturer?

I am also looking for suggestions for a press and roller wash. My rollers are composition, from Tarheel Roller. I’d like to use something other than kerosene as Tarheel and the ‘old-time’ printer that’s been helping me out have suggested I use.I was going to use California Wash, until I found out that it’s not good for the composition, but I think…[Read more]

There is a reclaimed cotton stock! It’s made by Arch Paper (http://www.archpaper.net/servlet/StoreFront), and even comes in colors. Their website says:”ARCH paper is a beautiful, archival, 100% cotton text- and cover-weight paper made from recycled clothing and textiles. It has a beautiful textured finish appropriate for business cards, greeting…[Read more]

i also did not like Lettra, but it is a cheaper cotton paper (if I could afford Pescia for everything I would use it only), so now that i’ve used it for a while, it has grown on me. i have tried scoring it as well, and i do believe it has a grain, so folding that way does help, but not every time……. 🙂 Legion paper is fast and you can now…[Read more]

Just to let you know that I cleaned the rollers with paint thinner and fine steel wool.It worked perfectly.Now I will put white ink on the machine. Let it roll some time and clean again. Then it should be crisp and clean, and I can start using it :-)I’ll post some pictures in the coming days 🙂

I’ve never had a successful order from Crane with Lettra. they SUCK! I’ve given them plenty of opportunities as well. I now buy direct from Legion and my REP ROCKS!!!! He’s from west coast legion but often I can order under the $250 minimum without paying extra. AND he’ll let me request the parent sheets to be cut down at minimal cost. I usually…[Read more]

Christie- where did you order the coasters from? I’d like to try printing some but haven’t found any. AmericanCoaster’s website is no more and that’s the place that most people have (in the past, obviously) recommended. Thanks!!

I really enjoy printing on Somerset natural….Paper.com sells envelopes to match. I don’t remember the cost, but it is a beautiful paper. It takes the impression well though I have not tried broad areas. Hope that helps…-elan

I know it’s more expensive, but I love printing on our handmade paper. When you want to wow people with something extra special nothing shows of the beautiful tactile qualities of letterpress better than nice, soft, handmade paper! http://www.porridgepapers.com
