Yes we are! The NSS folks are behind in sending out contracts this year, so that’s put us behind as well. Look for an email with details about it early next week!

Yeah. I’ve been on briarpress a lot. I need to figure out how to find a chase for my machine. It’s missing that and rollers.

I would second the floor model idea, personally. For one thing, you can probably get two 8x12s for the price of one Pilot. Secondly, if you are going into business, you are probably going to print in quantity, and at some point your time sched. will become crammed enough that pulling the one armed bandit will be just too slow. Pilots are gr…[Read more]

Gary Johanson replied to the topic Proper use of the word letterpress? in the forum Business Matters 10 years, 10 months ago
Thank you for not calling it as having been “letterpressed”. Sets the hair on the back of my neck on edge whenever I hear a proper noun used as a verb. But all that aside . . . back when Letterpress was part of a standard commercial shop, and still a part of the daily production routine, Letterpress was the term given to the press type i…[Read more]

there’s a lot of information on briarpress.org. I would recommend checking the site out for tips on press clean up and general printing information. If you are on the east coast, Concord Engraving is the cheapest for photopolymer and mag dies. if you are on the west coast, crown flexo graphics? they are also the cheapest I’ve found.

I just returned from a visit at Letterpress & Things with John Barrett. He was very friendly, informative and found some great deals on parts. For materials I use Concord Engraving exclusively. They make mounted mag plates and polymer plates. They have the lowest prices, fastest turnaround and are very easy to work with.

Thanks, Samantha. I think I’m figuring that out. They don’t seem as clean when I leave them on, and you’re right about the trucks. I have the box with wooden frames with holes that the roller company sent. I am putting them back in the hanging slot, and it seems to work, but I love the idea of an old sewing drawer, too! Thanks for your thoughts….

Hi Susan,I’ve had a Pearl #3 and to me it was just as easy and maybe easier to take the rollers out and clean them really well and if you already have them out to clean, then might as well just keep them out. I personally store my rollers in an old sewing drawer with grooves to hang the end of the cores so they don’t touch anything. they just hang…[Read more]

I absolutely do not put my logo on custom work. Clients pay me for their design, printing, etc and it should represent the best work I can do–but for them. I always include a business card (or two) in the box so if they’re happy with my work they can share my contact info easily. The one exception is sending out samples–then I do label my work.

Hi Susan,Oops….well, to be honest I’ve cleaned them both ways, sometimes putting a bit of solvent on the disc and letting the press run for a minute or two so the ink comes clean easily. I like to take the rollers off simply because my C&P is up on a 2×4 base and the rollers are harder to reach with a wash-up rag. (If you have adjustable trucks,…[Read more]

Barb,Thanks so much. I actually meant leaving the clean rollers on the press instead of removing them. I do clean with solvent after each use, but I thought perhaps I could clean them on the press and then let them be as long as they weren’t resting on the disk. I use oil-based but I am about to switch to rubber-based.Thanks again!Susan

Hi Susan,Are you running conventional ink, or rubber-base? Regular (Oil-based) inks need to come off after the job is finished, while rubber-based inks can remain on the rollers overnight (or so). If you have any question about the kind of ink you are using, or any additives (dryer, tack reducer, etc.) then by all means, play it safe and clean the…[Read more]
