I finally got in touch with his wife, she is really sweet. I hope he recovers quickly as well. Sounds like she has a positive outlook and is hopeful.

love the Xyron, but it is only good for quantities under 250 I think. I still haven’t tried the strathmore label. it’s on the list!

I have contacted them all! They do have grippers, just an unusual way of paper feeding, such as the angled feed board …”To feed the paper you return the cylinder to the left side (as you are facing the press) and carefully drop the sheet onto the little toothed ledge near the cylinder. Crank the press (while the lever is on print) and at the ink plate end, grippers will come up from underneath and grab onto the sheet, pulling it to the cylinder and form as you crank it back …and the ink plate is at the right end, which functions in place of the ink drum on later models. Basically you ink the plate and then crank the press on trip to distribute the ink. the function of the distributor roller is exactly the same as the later models.”as I was told by an owner & operator of a Vandercook No.17, who I found on that census list, JoDee Stringham. She is the expert here as I do not even have the press in my possession as of yet, nor have I ever personally operated one.I am thankful for everyone’s help that I have contacted so far, I would recommend that vandercook website you mentioned, Kelly, to anyone who has never visited it and has any interest in Vandercook presses.

I think Mohawk owns Strathmore. … Went to the website and look what I found:MOHAWK SUPERFINE LABELSMOOTH, SOFTWHITE, 60 text, (89 gsm), 8.5×11, (216×279) 100-sheet package $8.99STRATHMORE WRITING LABELWOVE, RECYCLE BRIGHT WHITE, 70 text, (104 gsm), 8.5×11, (216×279) 100-sheet package $35.99HUGE price difference. Has anyone used either of these label papers for bookplates or wine labels by chance?

I love Arch paper and I don’t think it’s too soft for a folded card, it is so yummy b/c it feels like your favorite t-shirt. I’m going to order some of the Holyoke soon too, glad to hear folks like it.Lettra can’t be beat on price for a nice cotton sheet, but it’s certainly not perfect. My secret for scoring, may not be a good practice, but it works for me. I get different point size lines in photopolymer and put them on my boxcar base with no ink. Again, not perfect, but scores nice & heavy with minimal cracking.I also just ordered some of the new Bamboo paper from Legion and will let you know how that works out. It’s only 265gsm as opposed to the 300 of Lettra, but I hope to use it for folded cards so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.I also like Copperplate from Atlantic Papers and let’s see … can I think of anything else?Oh! who has tried the Strathmore/Mohawk? What do you think about that??ps. i’ve always coveted that Pescia too, Kathryn, but have never laid down the cash for it

I haven’t but I’d love an excuse to go there and squeeze in a few Cirque du Soleil shows! Oh, and sell some letterpress stationery too. 😉

I would be very interested in this idea. I exhibited in 2008 and it was great, but definitely an undertaking for a single lady {of letterpress} Pooling resources and collective talent sounds like a win-win to me too.

I send other papers to Atlantic and they have duplexed them for me in the past. another word to use would be “laminate” I know of a shop in Denver that will do it too. Where are you located?I’ve done 8.5×11 sheets on my Xyron machine, too.

ooh. thanks for all the tutorial on this Christy, never thought to try this myself. if you want someone else to do it for you, go to Exclusive Bordering Company {ottoprinting.com}I have used gilding powder from Daniel Smith {they call it dry pigment} but only brushing across part of my design as quickly as possible after it’s been printed so it sticks to the ink. which makes for slow printing. i print say 10 at a time, brush them with the powder, set them aside, and repeat. this really old blog link shows the wedding invite i did it on, though you probably can’t see enough detail with the actual powder:http://handmaidenpapeterie.blogspot.com/2008/05/golden-delicious.html

ugh. I totally agree. What is with this philosophy? ? I want this exactly and I what I really want is for you to copy it for a cheaper price, and I want it yesterday. It also kills me when I come up with a design completely independently and then see something ridiculously similar online, I would hate for someone to think that I copied their work when I really didn’t!
