@billjones Hi Bill,
One of our conference attendees asked about you, wondering if you’ll be attending the conference this year, and though we haven’t heard from you, I thought I’d check in and see. I hope you’re doing well these days.Best,

Hi Shayna, I had a similar problem and getting brand new trucks solved it for me. I got Delrin trucks from NA Graphics. Good luck!

I should mention that the print on my wall was printed (I think) with Van Son rubber-based ink. It was a gift from a friend. Other prints hanging in the same area seem like they haven’t faded, at least not as much, but I don’t have ‘controls’ to compare them to. I’m tempted to do some tests as well – let’s compare our results!

Jessica C. White replied to the topic Please Help an Amateur Printer decide the next step up in letterpress printing. in the forum Business Matters 12 years, 8 months ago
Carrie,Do you have a community print shop nearby, or do you have the funds to travel to one? I recommend that you take a class where you can try out these presses before you buy one. I teach workshops at Asheville BookWorks where you can print on all of these types of presses, and some flatbed cylinder presses as well. You can get started working…[Read more]

Jessica C. White replied to the topic What are you packing? How are you wiping? in the forum Press Troubleshooting, Tips, and Help 12 years, 9 months ago
For packing, I place red pressboard under the tympan and then place packing under the red pressboard. I use a whole variety of paper and card, usually scraps of what I have around, but stick to the kind that’s smooth and dense. I also like Mylar – it comes in a few thicknesses, and is nice and hard.I learned to wash up with mineral spirits, so I…[Read more]

Jessica C. White replied to the topic What's the best type of container to store mixed rubber-based ink in? in the forum Press Troubleshooting, Tips, and Help 12 years, 9 months ago
I fold it up in a piece of tin foil and tape a little tap-out test on the outside so that I can see what color it is.

Jessica C. White replied to the topic Studios that make their own paper? in the forum Design Side 12 years, 10 months ago
I occasionally make my own paper, depending on what I need for a particular project. I usually use my handmade papers for artist books, fine press books or broadsides, but have made some papers on commission as well. I don’t have my own papermaking studio – I rent time at Asheville BookWorks.

Jessica C. White replied to the topic Magnesium or Zinc Plates in the forum Supplies and Sources 12 years, 10 months ago
Try Owosso – http://www.owossographic.com/ or AA Dies – http://aadieinc.com/. I haven’t had plates made from either company yet, but I’ve spoken with both and they’re very helpful.

Jessica C. White replied to the topic Calligraphy to Letterpress? in the forum Business Matters 12 years, 11 months ago
The calligrapher I work with is very selective about her paper, so I don’t provide her with paper, but she knows to work with black ink on bright white paper.I do something similar to Kathryn, but I scan in everything (all hand drawn things) at 1200 dpi as line art. Then I open the file in Photoshop and change the mode to bitmap. Again I’ll save…[Read more]

@domenicawebb Hi Nikki,
I just use low odor minerals spirits from my local hardware store. You can also check out California Wash, and I’ve also heard that some people use Crisco to clean off the ink, then mineral spirits to clean off the Crisco. Check our forums to see if this topic has been addresses, and if not, you should start a thread and…[Read more] -

Yes! I had the Morgan Expansion Trucks, then switched to Delrin. Better results so far.

I recently had a similar problem. I took all the tape off my rails and cleaned the rails *really* well with a brass wire brush (the kind that spins on the end of a drill), and put a good clean layer of tape down. Then I ordered new trucks (Delrin). I think the new trucks did the trick; at least it’s been printing well for the last 2 weeks!

Thanks for the extra info, Kelly! It makes so much more sense to me now, knowing that the line is called a deadline, not the bar!

In case anyone else has been wondering, I just found out from Paul Moxon (of the amazing Vanderblog) that it’s called a ‘head dead bar’.

@jochegwyn Hi Jo,
Sorry it’s taken so long for me to reply – I’ve been swamped with conference work! To get a good impression on your press, you may need to add packing, or make adjustments to the platen using the large screw on the back of the platen. I suggest that you do a quick search in the forums to see if this question has already been…[Read more] -

@eleftheriabalkoyannakia Hi Eleftheria,
I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reply – I’ve been swamped with conference work! I hope you enjoyed your visit to England, and that you found someone who can teach you edging. If not, I suggest that you post your query in the forum and hopefully one of our members will have some good advice for you.
Best,

@alanwrunfeldt I really appreciate your support for this community! It’s always encouraging to hear of old-timers (no offense) out there who are willing to spend the time to teach new printers, and to share your knowledge. I love all of the good info on your website, and I hope to be able to visit your museum someday!
