kelly mcmahon replied to the topic Impression heavier on edges of text block in the forum Press Troubleshooting, Tips, and Help 12 years, 3 months ago
Allie, a few more details should help narrow down your trouble.(1) What press are you working on? (You might be exceeding the impression strength of the press.)(2) Is the impression that’s heavier, or is there more ink at the ends of the lines? (Check this by taking an impression with no ink on the press.)(3) Are you running the lines of type…[Read more]

Hi Sara, I’m here in Santa Rosa and work at Invitations by Ajalon. I am working on starting my own press here in Sonoma County (http://foldingbonespress.wordpress.com), but can’t even imagine a studio space yet. This sounds like quite the opportunity! I have been working out of my garage and at Ajalon.I am going to read your post in more detail…[Read more]

The color of the paper is shining through. Is there transparent white ink in the formula? You should probably use Van Son Tough Tex, it can be purchased at http://www.bsink.com/

What kind of platen press is it? Is it a tabletop press or an 8×12? If so, I highly recommend John Folstrom’s platen leveling tool:http://www.perennialdesigns.net/?page_id=1358We just used that to level the platens on our two old rustbucket rescue C&P Pilots and it worked great. Very little physical instruction needed; it’s pretty self explanatory…[Read more]

Annika Buxman replied to the topic Edge Coloring? in the forum Design Side 12 years, 3 months ago
I’ve tried edge coloring a dozen different ways and have finally settled on using an airbrush (The Copic marker airbrush is great with virtually no cleanup and you can easily match pantone colors). I put the cards in the cutter, slice, and leave the clamp down. The clamp down ensures that the cards are nice and straight. Mask around the stack with…[Read more]

Adina, This is the same problem I always have with Stardream on the C&P. Vandercook works better for me when lightly inked. For the last few years I’ve been avoiding Stardream altogether and using Curious Metallic instead because it takes the print so beautifully. Good luck on your project!–Annika

Christy,Congratulations on the new family member! =)I’ve had a few presses in the 6 years that I’ve obsessed over letterpress printing. The very first press I purchased was an Adana HS No. 2 table top. I named her Adele. The next presses I purchased were a 6×10 Craftsman tabletop and a 3×5 Kelsey. I didn’t have them long enough to name. I then…[Read more]

It looks like too much ink is the problem; I use very little (we use rubber base also), with very soft packing so the plate really sinks in. The back of the sheet bruises because of the soft packing, but this is the best way I’ve found to avoid smears.

Welcome to LoLP! 🙂 I’ve already enjoyed your lovely paper. Glad you moved safely. Moving a letterpress was stressful enough for me … I can’t imagine 4 semis of stuff. Ever. Yikes!
