I normally use crisco but when I’m in a hurry I use a few sprays of goo-gone. Goo-gone is like magic compared to the crisco. For packing, I use red pressboard and then paper that has it’s thickness printed on it. I think there are six thicknesses between .002″ and .16″ Knowing the caliper makes it easy when adjusting makeready.

For packing, I place red pressboard under the tympan and then place packing under the red pressboard. I use a whole variety of paper and card, usually scraps of what I have around, but stick to the kind that’s smooth and dense. I also like Mylar – it comes in a few thicknesses, and is nice and hard.I learned to wash up with mineral spirits, so I…[Read more]

I fold it up in a piece of tin foil and tape a little tap-out test on the outside so that I can see what color it is.

Well, here I am adding commentary a year later, but after reading these posts, I wonder where you folks are with edge coating now, a year later? Have any of y’all gotten the technique down to where you are comfortable with it? Another thought: probably would be good to do the edge coating first, then print the face of the cards. That way you wo…[Read more]

For packing, use a piece of red press board, and above that, use paper with a smooth finish . I used to use old xray film for packing but those days are gone. Vegetable oil will work for cleanup if the ink doesn’t have a lot of dryer in it. The next step up is WD40. Ordinarily, I use ordinary paint thinner (oleum) but don’t try that biod…[Read more]

For long term storage it’d be metal or glass. For medium term storage WAXED paper cups. Under no circumstances is plastic really good, as the ink solvents will outgas through the plastic, leaving the ink as a skin on the outside of the cup. Plastic is good for a day or two, but for more than that, use something else.

Jennifer Brown replied to the topic Letterpress "machine" in the forum Design Side 13 years, 3 months ago
Hi Ladies. Since my reply above, I bought a Poco Proof press, and I have to say, its a bit like these machines that say they letterpress… or even emboss. If you have ever looked at Sizzix, Cuttlebug or Quickutz embossing folders for the at home crafters, the machines they use to press the paper (I think) is a lot like the Poco. I have ac…[Read more]
