Tabling this for the moment…even the smallest cylinder press won’t fit through the door of the potential space, and we’d need to use cylinder presses for a co-op studio, so that just won’t do!

Jessica’s advice is great. Another way to give it a try is set up the press with an old plate, Once all your adjustments are made, put your new plate on. That way if there is a problem, you have not damaged a plate that you still need to use. It is always better to error on not enough packing and work your way up to the correct pressure you are…[Read more]

@jessicacwhite Thanks, Jessica. Realizing I am not currently a letterpress printer in my personal studio (although I used to do it; I don’t at this time, but due to my school shop job I am always around it) —I am just here to say that I totally support the idea of “Women In The Print Shop,” and think it is way cool to have this forum!

I did know about the conference, but not about that particular panel! I wish we could make it – we have 2 personal events 2 days in a row in completely different parts of the country right when it’s happening, though. Will there possibly be transcripts/video/audio available post-conference??

So awesome that you’re doing this! You know (shameless conference promotion) that we’re having a panel at LofLCon on starting a community print shop, right? It would be great if you could come!

I’ve used 220 on a Vandercook and smashed photopolymer pretty hard with no troubles. Definitely adjust the packing first, though!

Sandra Youngblood replied to the topic What should I mount my Pilot on? in the forum Supplies and Sources 14 years, 5 months ago
In a local antique shop we found a very used set of silver metal tables. (Think grunge-loft-paint splattered-industrial. I love them, but my husband just doesn’t get it! Anyway…the Pilot will be mounted on one of the tables.) My press instructor advised that I get a solid cabinet-grade piece of lumber to place on the table’s metal top and t…[Read more]

@courtneykaminski Courtney,
I’d be delighted to share our upcoming trials and tribulations with the C&P Pilot, and would love to hear all about your experiences as well! We have had ours for less than a week and still haven’t gotten it moved upstairs! I’m in the process of ordering all kinds of goodies: Vanson rubber inks, papers, etc. Do you…[Read more] -

@courtneykaminski Yes! Welcome to LofL, and to the Pilot. I’m learning everything myself, so I’d love to trade C&P knowledge with you whenever!

That’s what I was taught to do, but I guess because I’m still a newbie printer I’m afraid even without all the tympan it would be too thick. Maybe I worry for naught!

I’ve printed with this and other thick papers on cylinder presses. The trick to avoid smashing type is to adjust the amount of packing you’re using to accommodate the thickness of the paper. Remove the number of sheets of packing that add up to about the same thickness to your paper — I like to remove more than enough, then slowly add sheets…[Read more]

Here’s the link for more photos – http://www.etsy.com/listing/68253581/antique-letterpress-printer-block-drawer. The next-to-last photo shows possible holes left over from moving the drawer pull (if one side was chopped off), and the last photo makes it look possibly chopped as well. Maybe the brass corners were meant to hide that?

I’ve never seen a two-thirds case like this…it looks to me like someone chopped the right-most section off a full-size job case. Does the left edge look thicker than the right to you?

Ok, so I saw this and I had to know! It’s almost like this one (the middle and right parts, anyway). I want to think it’s a job case, but I couldn’t find it on the extensive Alembic Press site . . . maybe for a Kelsey?

@jessicacwhite Jessica,
I did see that episode. I have only found 1 press at a thrift store.
It is the small Kelsey. I am always on the lookout. -

@judithberliner Hey Judith,
Did you see that American Pickers episode where they bought a Pearl for $200? They weren’t sure what it was, but just loved it, and had to call in an expert to explain it to them. (I’m watching them now, and thought of you!)
