I am in central Pennsylvania (Northumberland) and am interested… It appears to be an 8 hour drive though (525 miles). Does it come with anything else?

jsml replied to the topic cutting parent sheets down to size in the forum Business Matters 9 years, 9 months ago
Question: I bought a fancy paper cutter (kind with the wheel/crank to tighten it and a sort of bridge over), but it only has an opening of something like 18″. Sheets come in sizes like 28×20 or other sizes that won’t fit into the paper cutter. What do people do in these situations? Taking it to someone else seems to defeat the purpose of having…[Read more]

Bryan Hutcheson replied to the topic Am I the only one who thinks foil is cheesy? in the forum Design Side 9 years, 9 months ago
Yeah, I understand the white foil thing. The last time foil was big was back 15 yrs ago, that’s why I bought my first foil unit. I make my own plates so I don’t need to order them. I also run all windmills and a KSB CYLINDER.I’m going to stand by my original comments. Foil is really trendy right, just like blind emboss was a few years ago. The…[Read more]

Bryan,Congratulations on your foil boss and thermo base! Not many people can say they made an old one work and make a heated base too. What press did you hook this up to?I respectively disagree that foil is “gaudy and cheap looking”. Can you letterpress print matte white and get the same opaque coverage in one pass on colored paper? How about…[Read more]

Hi Marit,I have a retail storefront and small letterpress studio that share the same space (letterpresses are behind the counter). It is situated in a century-old building with stone and brick walls. I do not have a ventilation system, but I use odorless mineral spirits and rubber based ink. Most customers that come in when printing is taking place…[Read more]

Arie Koelewyn replied to the topic Point size in the forum Job Advice 9 years, 12 months ago
The digital point, I believe, is exactly 1/72 of an inch and the metal Anglo-American point is slightly larger. For most purposes you can set short amounts of text on the computer and have it come out fairly closely to the computer version when using the same point size. The differences can be noticeable, however. On a 36 page poetry chapbook I…[Read more]

Thanks Samantha…last week I printed and several times accidentally printed on the tympan!! Had a lot of transparent medium in there so it didn’t stay wet long ;0) Thanks for the tip on the ink and I’ll check that out.

I went ahead and purchased an 8oz tin from southern-ink.com, to test out. I just tested it today and it does stay open and dries quick, especially helpful when I miss and I accidentally print on my tympan sheet. I loaded it in the morning… Went to lunch…came back and ran the press. If you want to see a photo, I posted it on my Instagram, http://www.in…[Read more]

Cutting sticks are often sold by the same folks who sharpen blades. Have you asked them?My cutter would also take a 1.25″ square cutting stick–but a friend did what Arie is suggesting, and made a kind of “holder” out of 1.25″ wood, and you can fill it in with .5 or .75″ plastic sticks. If your blade sharpening folks don’t offer sticks, I get mine…[Read more]

Cut a 1/2 x 1/2 inch slot into the wooden stick. If you place it right you may get 2 cutting surfaces out of each plastic surface.
