Print Exchange and Exhibition: Chance Operations

$7.00

Ladies of Letterpress & the Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library, The University of Utah, invite conference participants to submit to the 2025 Print Exchange & Exhibition, organized in conjunction with the 2025 Conference in Salt Lake City, UT. The theme is Chance Operations, inspired by the Dadaists’ and John Cage’s practice of creating art in response to external constraints. So, get out your dice, darts, I-Ching, search engine, or other enactment of randomness to start you on your printing adventure. We encourage you to work spontaneously, responsively, randomly, experimentally, with self-assigned constraints, or however you might interpret the theme.

Each participant will submit an edition of twenty-three letterpress prints and receive a collection of twenty-five (25) letterpress prints from fellow contributors. In addition, the Ladies of Letterpress, Book Arts Program, and University of Utah Rare Book archives will each be presented with a complete set.

Deadline: Participants must register for the exchange and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED by June 20, 2025.

Eligibility: Open to all conference participants.

Submission GuidelinesPrints must be 11”x 14” and involve a minimum of one letterpress run. Other editionable strategies may be employed.

Please allow prints to dry completely before mailing. If there is a chance that prints might offset, please interleave with glassine.

The sets will be collated and distributed to participants at conference registration.

Exhibition Jurying: As space allows, one copy from each participant will be exhibited at the Marriott Library, July 7-October 3, 2025. If space does not allow for exhibition of the full set of prints (dependent on number of participants), the Book Arts Program faculty will act as jury. Upon de-installation, the exhibition set will be housed at the Book Arts Program, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah.
