I recently did the same for about 50 galleys. After cleaning off the rust, I used a rag and rubbed a light coating of 3-in-1 oil on them. Works great, and not smelly.

I share your concern about doing deep impression work on a C+P. How much pressure is too much for the press?

Hello,Give Paul a shout at the Platen Press Museum here in Illinois (just google his site and you’ll find his email). I know he’s got a ton of galleys and a handful of composing sticks, it’s just a matter of what size and quantity you need, and if he’s got something handy at the moment. His prices are also very fair.Hope that helps!Jen

Oh, really? Well … then … I have a lot of freedom! Also, an excuse to buy more metal type (I just bought a few typefaces when we bought our Showcard signpress). Aaaah! Maybe now I have too much freedom. Heehee. Yay!That makes me so happy. And a little giddy.

tiffany… the howard machine uses traditional type high typefaces. you are only limited by the size of your type holder. for example, most kingsley machines hole 18 pt type. but there are plenty of other sized type holders, so we are able to use all sorts of typefaces! hope that helps!

Jessica, did you ever get in touch with Mr. Hopkins from Mr. Kent’s post here? If so, I think I may have to send an email as well. I’ve just started growing my type collection, and having a bunch of those miscellaneous (but fun) signs and symbols seems very useful!

I have a Howard hot foil stamp machine … is Kingsley type compatible? I’m having a horrible time finding type for my machine (short of buying some new, I guess).

You may need to invest in new rollers! They aren’t too old, but you never know how they were used/stored before they came into your hands. That said, my rollers are only about a year old, and I sometimes have similar issues. After taping my rails (one more than the other) and adjusting my platen (and/or packing), I’ve gotten some better results,…[Read more]

Hi Alicia,In the past, I have had to print solids, and the folks are right—it is difficult at best to get a nice, rich solid. A couple of things I did to help included the following: if you have them, run the idler rollers on your form rollers to maximize your ink supply. I would (by gentle stages) thin the ink out, and as a last resort, I’d…[Read more]

Lynn Allison Starun replied to the topic Has anyone tried Caligo ink?? in the forum Supplies and Sources 11 years, 10 months ago
Hi,I’ve used Caligo for letterpress printing and for doing a sort of poster large print with linoleum blocks mixed with type. It worked well straight out of the tube. We were doing a hands on demo for children and the clean up was so easy. I like baby wipes for when there’s no sink handy. I’ve also used it adding a little magnesium car…[Read more]

hmmm. I’m not sure the exact size. the Quoins I have are about 1.5 inches. so small. I have a Golding Pearl #11. As far as composing sticks. didn’t realize there are different sizes. I guess not very large one since I only have about a 9″ width.I would be looking to get 1 or 2 Quoins.

I curated a contemporary art show where I wanted to quote the lyrics to “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni MItchell and somehow I got in touch with someone who represented her. I was told I had to pay around $100 to just print the lyrics on the press release. So, I didn’t print all the lyrics, just the line I was referring to in my exhibition. This is…[Read more]
