I have an idea, from your postcard suggestion. What about an exchange of postcards about the places where we live, like those “Hello from…” postcards?

Perhaps one of the working foundries has a solution for this dilemma. I’m sure we could all use some @@’s.

Do you use Mild Citrus Thinner between colors, or just at the end of the day?

@papercabaret Hi Sachkia,
I just noticed from the member’s map that you are way out in the Virgin Islands! I visited Puerto Rico and Vieques a few years ago, and loved it. Are there many people who letterpress print there? Did you have to ship the press, or did you buy it there? I’m so glad you’ve joined, and welcome!Jessica

Oh, fantastic! Thanks for the link.You’ll need to use an Eyelet Setter – http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/item/Paper-Source-Eyelet-…. Put the eyelet/rivet in place, then put the eyelet setter on the rounded side, and gently tap the back of the setter tool with a hammer a few times, until you get the thickness you need. (no need to…[Read more]

That’s helpful! I’m glad to know they’re called eyelets, too. 🙂 So you just whack them with a hammer?Here are some more colored ones . . .http://www.eyeletoutlet.com/round-eyelets.html

I’ve been getting mine from Paper Source – http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/color/Eyelets/2904.012/702.html.I don’t know about tightness – I hammer mine down tight for book binding purposes, and don’t want anything turning, but they seem high enough to stay loose for turning paper.But they don’t have brass, which I’m also looking for. I…[Read more]

I do have a level surface, and checked that when I was all inked up. I know there is a thing as “over-tightening” as well… I tried a few things to no avail. I will be leveling this weekend. Thanks so much 🙂

I LOVE the Mild Citrus Thinner from Eco-House. It cleans and degreases really well and actually smells good. They also have an almost completely odorless thinner. It’s certainly pricey, but I can’t stand to use anything else.http://www.eco-house.com/citrus_thinner115.html

I don’t know about the smell. I never even opened it.

How does Ultra smell? I ask because I think I’m at the end of being able to use California Wash–I can’t stand the odor any more! Someone here wrote once about using alcohol instead . . . we use Crisco for the final wash of the day, but could use something less obnoxious for color changes.

If you haven’t solved this already, you might check to make sure that the base hasn’t worked up from uneven quoin tightening, causing the inking to be heavier on the side that’s higher up in the chase. Do you have a level surface for locking up?
