I got my postcards on Saturday. Everyone did a great job – it’s really cool to see everyone’s different takes and different techniques.

I’ve switched to Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits as a clean up now because the California Wash evaporates so fast, it was difficult to really clean the rollers. With mineral spirits I use less and it goes further. I do not keep a spare set of rollers.Hope that helps!

I too have been wondering about how to clean my rollers. The previous press owner instructed me to wash the press and rollers with California Wash mixed 50/50 with water (which he gave to me). It seems that the wash does a good surface cleaning, but I’ve been struggling to get all of the ink off. The press is getting clean pretty easily; it’s the…[Read more]

We print A2 and A6 cards on our 8×12 C&P and have not cut our base. We merely cut the paper after printing instead of before. It’s a little more labor intensive but, as I understand it, most people with platen presses do it this way. Also, it doesn’t limit us if we print something else like a larger print. We hope to graduate to a windmill soon in…[Read more]

We have been wanting to do the NSS. We plan to go as attendees this year to get a feel for the place for 2012. We also would be interested in a LofL booth.

I just received a promo from a company called progressluv2pak.com, and it looks like they have all kinds of boxes, many of them made of recycled cardboard. Could be worth a look!

I did a little experimenting on the weekend and found if they were vertical (Or just about) rather than laying flat, with a bright sun above but slightly behind the artwork (ie not at noon mayb 10am or 2pm) otherwise, if you’re not from such a sunny place strong lighting slightly behind vertical artwork could work too.

Caren Florance replied to the topic 3" thick printed band of color – linoleum block?? in the forum Design Side 14 years, 9 months ago
I know this is a late response to your query, but I hope it helps you or anyone else.Yes, lino is a good way to print solid areas of colour. I also use type-high blocks of wood that I get my local hardware to cut to shape for me. It’s hard to get things to exactly type-high, so best practice is to make sure they’re slightly under and then pack…[Read more]

John Sutherland replied to the topic Ink bleeding slightly… how to ensure a crisp print? in the forum Press Troubleshooting, Tips, and Help 14 years, 9 months ago
Had another thought about the problem you are having, (there’s always more than one way of looking at things in this game) and have thought of a couple of other ways the problem could be solved.1/ A frisket bar could be used to steady the sheet. This is a bar that is affixed between the platenand type/block. It steadies the sheet as it comes down…[Read more]

Lars K replied to the topic silver ink conundrum in the forum Design Side 14 years, 9 months ago
Hi Pilar,Metallic inks are always oil-based, and it’s necessary to overprint using oil-based inks (nor rubber). Rubber-based inks also dry by absorption — not oxidation like oil-based inks — so the two don’t play together well. If you remember this in your next run you should be good to go!Lars.

I’d recommend purchasing the 6 x 9″ base — it’s a workhorse here at Logos Graphics. I would not cut it in half as you’ll most likely lose the “squareness” of either side of the cut.As far as your gauge pins, I’d add furniture at the bottom of your chase to prevent them from hitting your base. Or, you can simply cut away the area where the gauge…[Read more]

John Sutherland replied to the topic Offset printing 1 Side with Letterpress On Other in the forum Job Advice 14 years, 9 months ago
Have you considered running your solid colour on letterpress? To do this without showing impression you could print the solid from a wood or metal- based plate (.918 thous high from memory) leaving plenty of bleed around the edges so that the heavy edge of the blockprint is later trimmed off. The rest of the solid would then have no discernable…[Read more]

If your machine is a clam shell platen; packing usually consists of one piece of card (about business card thickness) taped to the platen surface, 2/3 sheets of newsprint, or something of a similar thickness, another sheet of card then an oiled- manila top sheet. The card affixed to the platen is designed to ensure that when you spike two holes…[Read more]
