You might be too short for feeding your press. I’m 5′ 4″ and I need to stand on a small crate to efficiently feed my 8×12 OS. Build a stand that brings the feed board to a comfortable height where your arms can be bent 90 degrees at the elbows just above your feed board. Also, a thick concrete pad helps absorb the strain of impact of standing for a…[Read more]

Ah! How often I sing the praises of a good lube job! Oil your presses regularly to avoid a multitude of annoying issues. Glad it was such a simple thing that fixed your roller height problem!

I have just bought some @ and © symbols from M&H Typesetters; they have a special set of different sized symbols as a single purchase. They’re keeping up with the times!

Update…I finally had someone come out to look at the problem. He adjusted the bearings (exactly the same as we had done). The form roller height continued to change between print and trip, but the mechanic said there was no mechanical reason for this. So he lubricated the bolts at the pins/bolts at the end of the form rollers and it fixed the…[Read more]

Hi Camille,I’d be interested in joining in on another swap! I recently made my first bookplate for a show, and now I’m a little obsessed with them. What do you think about a bookplate/Ex Libris swap?

I work for Mohawk and we do have pressure-sensitive label stock in Strathmore and Superfine. It was originally developed for address labels on premium letterhead/identity programs. You can purchase small quantities now on mohawkpaperstore.com. We are also working with Fasson to introduce Superfine Wine Label. It will be awhile before it’s…[Read more]

Laura Shore replied to the topic How much to charge for custom design services? in the forum Business Matters 15 years, 3 months ago
Another way to look at pricing is to research others who are working in your style and with the level of clients you want to reach. You can see their published price lists. Some of this is on the web and some of it is in stationery stores with wedding books. Most markets have an accepted price range. You want to maintain the perceived quality…[Read more]

love the Xyron, but it is only good for quantities under 250 I think. I still haven’t tried the strathmore label. it’s on the list!

I have been searching for a solution to this same problem. I found a great posting a few months ago on the Studio on Fire blog mentioning the Strathmore label paper. I ordered some samples and feel like it is a good option, though the kiss-cut will be a new challenge for me.That said, I’m working on a label for a small bottle of gourmet vinegar…[Read more]

@visualchemist I just got my coaster stack, and I am blown away. Not only is each one a little work of art, but your cd-insert slip is really really great as well. We LOVE your typography coaster! Thank you so much for organizing the swap!
