Kseniya Thomas replied to the topic Putting on and taking off rollers on an 8×12 C&P in the forum Press Troubleshooting, Tips, and Help 13 years, 7 months ago
Right, with the rollers over the disk. I don’t thing you’ll bend the cores–there ought to be enough spring in the springs so that they’ll come out far enough. If you need to, you can push the saddle up with your hand to get the second roller in. If you push straight up–that is, in a straight line (the line the spring would make if it shot out!),…[Read more]

It’s easiest if you start with the roller at the top. Standing on the right side of the press (if you’re facing it in the operator’s position), put that top roller in first by sliding the core under the saddle furthest from you (across the ink disk) and use the butt of your hand to push the saddle closest to you up just enough to ease the roller…[Read more]

Do you think a machinist could fabricate one for you?

The right one on my press (standing in the operator’s position) has a little handle on it so you can push the whole saddle up to insert the other end of the roller–the left one doesn’t.

So awesome that you’re doing this! You know (shameless conference promotion) that we’re having a panel at LofLCon on starting a community print shop, right? It would be great if you could come!

Kseniya Thomas replied to the topic what is this layout? in the forum Supplies and Sources 13 years, 9 months ago
Ok, so I saw this and I had to know! It’s almost like this one (the middle and right parts, anyway). I want to think it’s a job case, but I couldn’t find it on the extensive Alembic Press site . . . maybe for a Kelsey?

Kseniya Thomas replied to the topic mixing pantone inks in the forum Job Advice 13 years, 10 months ago
I was disappointed by the new Pantone book, too, (plus the chromatic arrangement makes looking numbers up a huge pain!), so I wound up keeping my old (ca. 2006) one. Maybe you could find an old one with the parts breakdown on eBay? I have an old Ohaus scale (another member of team Antique Machinery), but I seldom use it. I start by mixing the…[Read more]

Kseniya Thomas replied to the topic Advice needed…looking to print a blind impression w/ a hint of silver in the forum Job Advice 13 years, 10 months ago
Transparent white + enough silver to make it visible will work–the ink will look more silver than it will print, so you can test saturation on the press. You can definitely mix transparent white with anything, especially if you’re printing plaids, or something, and want to see the color made by overprinting.

Kseniya Thomas replied to the topic Should I buy this press?? in the forum Supplies and Sources 13 years, 10 months ago
I cut my platen teeth on a 12×18 NS. (The platen teeth? They’re way in the back!) At first it was really intimidating (I am 5′ tall, for the record), but time and standing on a small box really helped me master this press. Now a 10×15 is my workhorse, and my 8×12 feels like a toy! The rust may not be a big deal–a vinegar-soaked rag will take it…[Read more]
